Biblio-Playback - A New Prism
(also called Playback Midrash)

I created this method in 2008-9 and am gratified that some of my students and others are now "paying it forward" by using this method in their own work. I give sessions to both women's groups and to mixed groups.
My method explores biblical stories and themes, using Playback techniques to experience them through the prism of our lives.
The other participants then "play back" the story to the storyteller.
the Gush Etzion Senior Center, for Shabbatons in New York, New Jersey, Cleveland (for Young Israel women), Ottawa (for educators, as Scholar in Residence), and in many other programs in Israel and internationally, including for the ATARA organization for Torah and the Arts, at a master class day during a conference in 2018 in Jerusalem, and via Zoom during COVID, under the auspices of the ATARA.

It combines the Bibliodrama method that I learned by observing Yael Unterman in a Bibliodrama session, and attending a full day intensive workshop with Bibliodrama creator Peter Pitzele, together with the Playback method, invented by Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas, that I've been teaching and conducting since 2003. I also had the privilege of personally studying Playback under both Jonathan and Jo.
In a Biblio-Playback session, we read, or study in depth (depending on the time frame), a story from the Tanach (Bible), I teach some of the classical Playback theatrical forms, and then the participants have the choice of speaking in the voice of a character from the Tanach, or telling their own personal stories, that are informed or inspired by one of the Tanachic stories.
Some of the stories I've worked with often are the story of Ruth and Naomi, and the story of Joseph and his brothers, but the method can be used with any book from the Tanach, including the Prophets, Megillot, Tehillim, and others.
